Safety Checklist

  • - Heat-resistant gloves (leather or Kevlar)
  • - Long-sleeved natural fiber clothing (no synthetics)
  • - Face shield or safety glasses
  • - Long-handled raku tongs
  • - Metal reduction containers with lids
  • - Fire extinguisher nearby
  • - Adequate ventilation (outdoor firing recommended)
  • - Water bucket for cooling pieces

Raku Firing Planning

Raku firing is a dramatic, fast-firing technique where glazed bisqueware is heated rapidly, removed from the kiln while red-hot, and placed in a reduction chamber with combustible material. The smoke and lack of oxygen create unique metallic and crackle effects.

Raku Firing Tips

  • Only use bisqueware that has been fired to at least Cone 06
  • Raku pieces are decorative - not food-safe due to porosity and crackle
  • Use newspaper, sawdust, or leaves as reduction material
  • The first load takes longest; subsequent loads heat faster (kiln is already hot)
  • Pull pieces when glaze appears glassy and smooth (watch for "glaze pull")
  • Always fire outdoors with proper safety equipment
