Understanding Kiln Firing Temperatures
Kiln firing temperature is measured using pyrometric cones, which measure heat-work (a combination of temperature and time). The cone system accounts for the fact that ceramics respond to total thermal energy, not just peak temperature.
Common Firing Ranges
- Low Fire (Cone 06-01): 1828-2046°F / 998-1119°C - Earthenware, decorative ceramics
- Mid Fire (Cone 4-7): 2167-2264°F / 1186-1240°C - Most studio pottery, stoneware
- High Fire (Cone 8-10): 2300-2381°F / 1260-1305°C - Porcelain, high-fire stoneware
Key Firing Tips
- Always candle (hold below 200°F) if pieces are not bone-dry
- Slow the ramp through quartz inversion (1063°F / 573°C)
- Heavier loads require slower ramp rates
- Vent the kiln during bisque to allow organic material burnout
