Understanding Kiln Energy Costs
Electric kilns do not run at full power the entire firing. The duty cycle (percentage of time elements are on) varies: lower temperatures cycle less, higher temperatures may run at near 100%. A typical mid-fire glaze firing averages about 60-70% duty cycle over the entire firing.
Energy Saving Tips
- Fire full loads whenever possible to maximize efficiency
- Keep kiln well maintained - replace worn elements
- Ensure kiln lid and bricks are in good condition (no cracks)
- Consider off-peak electricity rates for overnight firings
