Raku Firing Planning
Raku firing is a dramatic, fast-firing technique where glazed bisqueware is heated rapidly, removed from the kiln while red-hot, and placed in a reduction chamber with combustible material. The smoke and lack of oxygen create unique metallic and crackle effects.
Raku Firing Tips
- Only use bisqueware that has been fired to at least Cone 06
- Raku pieces are decorative - not food-safe due to porosity and crackle
- Use newspaper, sawdust, or leaves as reduction material
- The first load takes longest; subsequent loads heat faster (kiln is already hot)
- Pull pieces when glaze appears glassy and smooth (watch for "glaze pull")
- Always fire outdoors with proper safety equipment
