Structural Steel Section Properties

Section properties are used in structural engineering to calculate beam deflection, bending stress, and column buckling loads.

  • Moment of Inertia (I): Resistance to bending. Higher = stiffer beam.
  • Section Modulus (S): I divided by distance to extreme fiber. Used in bending stress: sigma = M/S.
  • Area: Cross-sectional area for axial load capacity.
