Population Estimation Formulas

Naroll (1962): P = Floor Area / 10

Area-Density: P = Settlement Area * Density Coefficient

Room Count: P = Rooms * Persons/Room * Contemporaneity

Naroll's formula (P = A/10) is the most widely cited, where A is roofed floor area in square meters. The formula assumes roughly 10 sq m of roofed space per person. Different settlement types and cultures require adjusted coefficients. Household size typically averaged 4-6 persons in pre-industrial societies.
