How to Calculate Load Bearing Wall Loads

Floor load: Floor PSF x Tributary width x Wall length

Roof load: Roof PSF x Tributary width x Wall length

Total: (Floor loads x number of floors) + Roof load + Wall self-weight

Header Sizing Guidelines

  • Up to 4 ft opening: Double 2x6 or 2x8
  • 4-6 ft opening: Double 2x8 or 2x10
  • 6-8 ft opening: Double 2x10 or 2x12
  • 8+ ft opening: LVL or steel beam required

Disclaimer: Always consult a structural engineer before modifying load-bearing walls.
