How Much Formula Does a Baby Need?

The general rule is 2.5 ounces of formula per pound of body weight per day, up to about 32 ounces maximum. However, every baby is different, so always consult your pediatrician.

Formula by Age Guidelines

  • Newborn (0-2 weeks): 1-2 oz per feeding, 8-12 times/day
  • 1-2 months: 3-4 oz per feeding, 6-8 times/day
  • 3-4 months: 4-6 oz per feeding, 5-6 times/day
  • 5-6 months: 6-8 oz per feeding, 4-5 times/day
  • 7-12 months: 6-8 oz per feeding, 3-4 times/day (with solids)

Formula Safety Tips

  • Prepared formula is good for 1 hour at room temperature
  • Refrigerated prepared formula lasts 24 hours
  • Opened powder containers should be used within 30 days
  • Never microwave formula -- use warm water bath instead
